HOW TO BEAT THE HOLIDAY BULGE
Now that the holidays are upon us, temptations will be endless to just eat drink and be merry. Along with those temptations come the holiday bulge from extra calories, extra servings and no extra exercise. To prevent that holiday bulge from peering through that new millennium tuxedo or dress, follow these simple tips to stave off the holiday calories and beat the bulge.
TIPS TO STAVE OFF HOLIDAY CALORIES
- Eat well before you go out to prevent eating as much at the party.
- Eat more from the fruit and vegetable platter and less from those foods higher in calories and fat.
- If you are hosting the festivities, cook more foods with fewer calories and fat and have less foods rich in calories and fat.
- Place small amounts of sauces, dips and dressings on the side of your food instead of taking the chance of placing too many serving sizes on top of your food adding calories you may not want.
- Drink the majority of your daily water requirement prior to attending holiday functions so you will feel full and not eat as much.
- Plan for eating at your holiday function by eating healthy before and afterwards to allow for any treats you might eat while socializing. You might even do this over several days or for the entire holiday season. Eat well on every day where there are no social engagements.
- If you are hosting the affair, have brunch or lunch versus evening affairs so you and your guests can work off the calories following the party by doing some of daily activities at the very least. If it's an evening party you're less likely to keep moving after eating and more likely to just go home and go to bed.
- Decrease alcohol consumption to lower the number of calories you consume and to allow yourself to make smarter food choices which you may be less likely to make under the influence of alcohol.
- Increase the number and duration of your cardiovascular and strength workouts around the holiday season to counteract additional calories and start the new year off right ahead of time.
- Try and socialize away from the food and bar so that it requires more effort for you to obtain the food and beverages. Hopefully having to make extra trips back and forth will either deter you from actually going, you'll dance instead or simply burn a few more calories making the extra trips.
May you have a safe and happy holiday season and health and prosperity in the next century.
